it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Failure is Impossible," comes to mind when I think about my ESL Students and the mandatory state exams they must pass in order to graduate. In order for my students to be ready for their Regents Exams, it is imperative that my classroom have the necessary supplies.
My students all live in New York City, but are originally from around the world, including Egypt, Bangladesh, Albania, Pakistan and Mexico.
The majority are recent immigrants. Two students just this month moved to the U.S. from Chile and Guatemala, They are all learning English and want to graduate from high school and move on to college. In my Social Studies classes, however, they must first reach success on two exams in order to graduate. Both exams are extremely challenging for my ESL students. Not having basic school supplies readily available in the classroom makes learning even more difficult for them.
My Project
My students need basic supplies such as notebooks, an electric pencil sharpener, a timer to help them with pacing and printer ink so that we can print necessary documents. My students will use the printer ink cartridges to print when needed and notebooks for completing classwork. The timer will help students understand that they must be able to complete their work in a allotted time. The sharpener will allow students to use sharpened pencils for the scantron sheets, as they are assessed, to get ready for their state exams.
My students have limited resources.
In other words, the majority do not have Internet access or a working laptop at home. A printer is a luxury and only in the school building they have the opportunity to print. Toner will allow me to print from the classroom.
