Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is very small, but diverse. We not only have many regular education classes, but also have 5 special education classes. Many of my students are from low socioeconomic backgrounds. Many of my students come from homes where either their parents are field workers or both parents work full-time to make ends meet. Our school is a Title I school with 81% of our students are from low income families.
I just love my class!
I am a Transitional Kindergarten teacher. Transitional Kindergarten is a Pre-K program in California that allows 4 year old students who didn't make the cut-off date (birthday between September and December) to attend a free preschool program. My students are so excited about learning! It brings a smile to my face to say that my now 5 year old babies are as passionate about playing as much as they are about learning! When I taught Kindergarten, it made me sad that we have moved to such a paper/pencil academic environment. It is my goal to make sure my Transitional Kindergarten students are provided fun, exciting experiences that will allow them to learn while creating and having fun!
My Project
Every year, my 4 and 5 year old babies take part in monthly drills. We go through fire drills, Earthquake drills, and lock down drills. You're probably aware what a fire drill and an earthquake drill are, however a lock down drill is when we practice what to do if we have to lock down the campus in case of a dangerous person on campus. Even though I talk about it, these are all very scary times for children.
It is so sad to me to see children cry the first time we have these drills.
I would love to be able to read a book to them so they can understand what we are doing, that they are safe, and that it is just practice. I tell them, but reading it in a book would be so much better! My children love learning through literature. These books are amazing!
I would also love to have Clorox wipes to keep my kids healthy and read books about germs so they understand why we need to clean.
