My students need hands-on science based activities, like these 4 activity tubs, and books to enhance understanding for the whole class and for small groups in the classroom.

My Students
My first graders are very curious. Every child in the world has asked, and will continue to ask, "Why?" I want to help my students answer this question and help them gain an understanding and appreciation for the world around them and how it works!
The students in my classroom are as diverse in academic levels as they are in culture.
Our Title 1, inner-city school is "home" to almost 1200 students with a multitude of ethnicities. There are over 30 languages spoken in our school. These 30 first graders are eager to learn every day!
My Project
In our district, our 1st graders will learn about several different topics that help them become more familiar with the world around them. Good science education is so important for every child, because science is everywhere, and understanding how it is a part of our daily lives can give students a great foundation for success in life. These activity centers will help engage my students and provide them with hands-on learning they love and need to make discoveries. The additional books will help them further their research and understanding of the states of matter, rocks, insects and plants and their development.
Our district has recently adopted the Common Core Standards. The incorporation of literacy into science will fit nicely into our curriculum and make a wonderful addition to our whole group, small group and individual researching, topic expansion, and independent reading.
Science education sometimes takes a back seat with the push of reading and math being so strong.
But, science is a part of our daily life. Everything we do and deal with in life is science from cooking, playing ball, growing a garden and understanding how technologies work to watching a rain storm. Understanding science and answering the great question, "Why?" will help my children appreciate and relate to the world around them.
