My Students
Franz Kafka said that a book must be the ax for the frozen sea within us. My third grade boys need to find an ax that will break through the ice of illiteracy that surrounds them.
My third graders represent the very best in America but many do not have the funds for clothes, school supplies, or recreational reading materials.
My students deserve a chance. The population of my neighborhood is changing. The economic downturn has impacted my students. According to the US Census, the average per capita income was only 2/3 that of the rest of the city. Over 1/2 of my students qualify for free and reduced breakfast and lunch, but we are not a Title I school. My students are racially and ethnically diverse. It is 39% Anglo; 14% African American/Black; 16% Alaskan Native and American Indian; 7% Asian; 6% Hispanic; 3% Filipino; 15% multiracial. 10% of my students are in bilingual/ bi-cultural programs. Many of my students are the children of deployed military personnel. This year, when we became a safe harbor school, we had students bused from other sections of town and the ethnic composition of our school changed. We have a problem with bullies.
My Project
Many of my male students are reluctant readers who read way below their grade level. As a result of their poor skills, they are teased when they have to read out loud or have to do a book report. I am always trying to help them find something to read. I need a wide variety of series books with enticing covers that will grab their attention.
New books will give my students an opportunity to find something interesting to read. They can share the books with other students and this will help improve their self esteem. Sharing a book with a friend is a great experience. When you read together you learn that everyone has strengths. You learn to celebrate those strengths. I am asking for high interest series books and copies of Bullying in the Schools so my students can learn to use their time constructively instead of destructively. We have no money for new books for our library. We need the help of Donors Choose.
A reading club is a great way to promote understanding and respect.
I desperately need series books for my students who are often both reluctant readers and bullied. I want to use Bullying in Schools as a discussion starter with my 3rd graders in my library and team it with the reading of new books. Help Townsend Press help us to acquire these important books.
