Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
The pandemic brought a host of challenges to the world of education and learning. Specifically special education and speech therapy, for me. How can I teach students how to make their sounds if they can't see me clearly? How will I help expand their language if the sound is constantly cutting out? How can I model good social skills if no one is paying attention? And in my school community, how can I help support them and their families if their parents are struggling to make ends meet? These are just some of the questions I struggled with throughout distance learning.
Fast forward to five years later and now there is a plethora of options available for integrating speech therapy with technology.
There are interactive games tailored to support specific speech sounds for students, you can customize engaging stories with language targets that help expand a student's vocabulary, there are social scenarios that you can discuss with opportunities for students to practice their pragmatic skills, you can even use a variety of apps to help a student work on vocal volume regulation. The opportunities are endless! However, since I do not have my own classroom I don't have a set of computers or Chromebooks that we can consistently access. These iPads would be a resource that my speech students would have access to in each of their sessions (both individual and group) whether that be to see demonstrations of sound productions from other students or even just as an end-of-session reinforcement. It would allow me to integrate technology into our speech sessions.
