My students need seating options that will allow them to get their wiggles out!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I teach special education and my students abilities vary across the spectrum. I have students with Autism, Specific Learning Disabilities, Emotional Disturbance, and Intellectual Disabilities. My students are third, fourth, and fifth grades, but occasionally I service some of our Kindergarten, first, and second graders as well. All of my kiddos have very unique learning styles so having multiple seating options will benefit all of them in the ways that best fits each student.
My kiddos are amazing and work hard to be successful and productive in our classroom.
Sometimes it is hard for them to remain in their hard plastic chairs. They need to get their energy out, but the problem is when they need to move they disrupt the entire class. The flexible seating will allow my students to move and bounce around to release their built up energy yet stay in their seats which will not bother the other students in the class.
My students are will benefit from flexible seating options to help them stay focused, by having the opportunity to move and "wiggle" as they stay in their seats. Although these items won't directly teach my students such as an iPad or a specific curriculum would, having options for their seating will make a huge impact on their learning by giving them the ability to remain in their area instead of getting up and walking around the room to release their energy. I have chosen the ball chairs with the frame so that the students can sit, bounce, or wiggle from side to side and the ball will remain still.
All donations from this project will help to increase student focus therefore reducing problem behaviors so that all students can learn and be successful in their classroom.
This will not only positively impact my special education students but all students in the class as well. Research shows giving students a choice helps them to take ownership of their environment which will aid in their learning. The ball chairs will help my students who like to bounce and the wobble and the ergo stools will not only help them move it will help to increase their core muscles.
I envision my students eager to get into class so they can utilize the flexible seating options. The new chairs will increase their motivation and engagement in the lessons because, not only will they have a more comfortable place to sit, but the choice will be theirs as to what type of chair they use for the activity. I want my students to be successful by having all the tools they need to feel confident and empowered to take on any task or activity presented to them!
