My Students
My student's love hands-on activities. Escape rooms, labs, projects, anything that they can be actively engaged in is a hit with them. With COVID, it has been a challenge to be able to do those types of activities but we have gotten creative and been able to make it work and allow for those memorable experiences in 8th grade.
I also teach reading and have developed my class to be all about Voice and Choice. When the students are able to have a choice in what they read, I have seen so much more buy in to their work. They are able to choose the projects they complete to show their reading and there are so many project options to appeal to all learners.
My Project
In my 8th grade reading class, I let my student's choose what books they read, while following a few criteria. They have to read two books a quarter and complete two projects per book, which they also get to choose. I truly believe that the kids get more out of their books and my class when they get to have some voice and choice in what they read.
We have a fantastic library at our school, but I love being able to offer my kids book choices in my own classroom. When this project gets funded, I will be able to offer my kids more options of books, along with more series. I am running out of room on my book shelf (which is a GREAT problem to have) so I also added a new bookshelf to my wish list.
