I have taught kindergarten for 12 years. I have a plethora of materials for children of that age group that I have collected over the years. I am teaching 3rd grade in the fall of the 2007-08 school year. I do not have additional materials to add to my classroom to make the curriculum more exciting and engaging for my third graders.
I am prioritizing all of the materials that would be helpful in creating a classroom of engaged learners. I know that creating a strong classroom library is where I should start. I would like to have multiple copies of books that are age appropriate with high interest to use during literacy groups.
Literacy groups (book clubs) allow a group of children to read the same story at the same time. The children stop at the same page several times throughout the text to engage in conversation about the book. This develops deeper understanding and interest in the book being read. The bottom line is literacy groups help children become better readers while developing the love for reading.
