Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As soon as I sing, "Hello Class," I have 30 pairs of delighted eyes staring at me, as they all sing back, "Hello, Ms. Carreras!" Upon entering, they are silent and attentive, ready to get started in our musical activities for the day. The silence ends quickly, as we excitedly break into song!
My students live in a high poverty area, and all qualify for 100% free and reduced lunch.
What my students lack in financial resources, they make up in spirit, passion, and raw talent. They all adore music, and sing to me when they see me passing in the hallway. They are so proud of the skills they are learning, and love to show them off! We are a Turn Around Arts school, partnering with the Presidential Committee for the Arts and Humanities, to use an arts integrated approach to help better engage our previously struggling students.
My Project
With these mallets, all children will be holding and practicing their xylophone technique, so that not a single minute is wasted while the students are sharing their instruments. I can have students double up and share the instruments, if I have enough mallets for each child. With these mallets, students will be making beautiful melodies, both songs that have been written already, as well as composing their own creations!
This donation will help my students maximize our precious classroom time, by cutting down on time wasted while students have to share instruments.
If everyone has their own set, two people can share and play at the same time.
