Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

As a sixth and seventh grade English Language Arts and Journalism teacher at one of the 12 most violent schools in New York City, I see fighting, anger, and the acceptance of violence on a daily basis. For my students, it is worse. Because I teach Journalism to a class of 15 sixth grade "problem" children, as well as to my seventh grade homeroom, I have an opportunity to allow 40 students to explore the effects of violence on communities. I want my students to experience a unit that will explore how violence has affected people around the U.S. and how real occurrences of violence are covered by the press. I want them to really get into the topic with a good book about school violence. “Give a Boy a Gun,” by Todd Strasser, is an intriguing story about what happens when you do give a boy a gun. I also will use newspapers and news programs to help the students work toward their final project -- a magazine article or a video news clip about how violence has affected their own school. I'll be teaching two classes -- one of 25 students and another of 15 "problem" children-- using this book, and I believe it will inspire them to think more critically about how what they do affects their lives and the lives of others while inspiring them to create something powerful on their own.
