Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The major goal of this project is to establish a free and accessible hygiene drawer for my students. I would like to have an area in my room where students can access items to fulfill their everyday needs, including snacks, menstrual products, chap sticks and lotions, and other self care products.
In my classroom, I live by the philosophy that a student cannot thrive academically unless all of their other needs are met.
This includes access to food, hygiene products, feelings of safety and care, proper rest, and feelings of excitement and engagement. My students are incredibly talented and hardworking teens. Sometimes, students may forget deodorant or breakfast in the morning, or may have had a rough night's sleep, and need access to a snack or hygiene product every now and again. Other times, students may not have regular and sustained access to the basic self care tools. In either situation, I want my students to know that they have an easy and accessible place to come to access these materials on a day by day basis.
I believe these materials will help my students thrive! Students are more likely to be engaged and retain information in an academic space if their emotional and physical needs are met. Furthermore, when students feel a sense of belonging in school, they are more likely to excel. Please help me meet the needs of all of my students!
