Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I can clearly remember several years ago having a student in class who was illiterate in her native Arabic. As an English language learner this meant that she was unable to use a Arabic translator. Every year I get students for which traditional translators do not work, either because they are illiterate or they speak a language which we do not have a dictionary for yet.
All of my students come to my class speaking a language other than English.
On a daily basis, Spanish, Korea, Arabic, Tagalog, Thai, Japanese, and of course English are spoken. I teach math, science, and history for new and beginning English Language Learning students in a high-need community. Additionally, 80% of students receive free or reduced lunches. Additionally, their educational experiences have been diverse. A few students attended private schools in their home countries, and other students have been out of school for a few years before entering the US public school system. My students necessarily need hands-on materials, visualizations, and extraordinary experiences to fuel their curiosity.
My Project
Traditional electronic translators are limited in the number of languages they can translate for. This is a problem since I can not guess which languages my students will speak in the upcoming year. I need my translators to be flexible, updatabile, and I need them to speak and listen. Goggle offers this ability through it's Goggle Translate app. I am requesting 1 iPod and case for my students to use as a personal translator. Students can speak in their native language, then it will translate it into English. They can also type an English word into the iPod and Goggle will translate it into one of nearly 50 languages. Roughly half of all languages are supported with a voice reading of the word. All major languages are represented, with more languages being supported monthly. Since the iPod is not limited to just a translating function I will also be able to add apps for a thesaurus, flashcard, and math tutor. All of these are free programs. As more apps are developed I will have the ability to add them to my student's personal tutor!
The future is here and my students have limitless information available to them.
Would you please give each student access to this information through supporting this project. Thank you.
