I am stepping in to help this self-contained special education classroom function in a way that helps our students succeed. They have some basics but need more so we can meet them where they are. I absolutely love working with these students and they deserve the best I can give them.
Using colorful and sturdy dividers that can be easily moved or adjusted to create separate work areas within the classroom.
This can help minimize distractions and provide a focused space for each student.
Wobble Stools: Wobble stools are fantastic for students who may benefit from movement while working.
Calming Corner: calming corner with comfortable seating such as bean bags or floor cushions, soft lighting, and calming sensory items like stress balls, sensory bottles, or textured materials. This area should be quiet and peaceful, allowing students to regulate their emotions and self-soothe when needed.
Break Area: Designate a separate area where students can take short breaks when feeling overwhelmed or overstimulated. This area can include activities like puzzles, coloring books, fidget toys, or simple stretching exercises to help students relax and refocus.
Curriculum Resources: Explore curriculum resources specifically designed for special education students, focusing on individualized learning goals, multi-sensory activities, and differentiated instruction. You can also incorporate assistive technology tools and interactive learning materials to enhance engagement and learning outcomes.
