My Project
These workbooks will provide tangible, structured lessons to help older students learn how to write in cursive. Many Arizona high school students were not taught cursive writing because it was removed from the Common Core Standards in 2010, but the state of Arizona did not reinstate it as a state standard until 2016. Students in this six year gap may have not been taught cursive writing.
Additionally the extensive use of computers and typing has shifted much of the focus away from handwriting.
Students often have poor or messy handwriting, and many cannot read cursive writing. Additionally, many students do not have a personalized signature, because they cannot write in cursive. These workbooks will allow for structured lessons in a student success class, so students can begin writing in cursive and practicing their own penmanship and writing style.
Over 90% of my students qualify as Title I and often don't have the resources they need to fully engage in their education. Most of them speak a language other than English at home, which makes them remarkable bilingual (or trilingual)language learners. Because they don't engage in cursive writing often, many of them have not had the opportunity to be formally taught the process. These workbooks will open that door and allow them to express themselves in a broader format through writing.
