My students need various manipulative items, including mazes, beads, puzzles and laces, to help develop their fine motor skills and attention to tasks.

My Students
My students depend on others to complete even the most basic functions through the course of a day. Some need assistance due to their physical limitations and others because their disability will not allow them to remain focused enough to complete a task. They need opportunities to develop skills.
I work in an NYC DOE District 75 school, meaning all of the students are severely disabled, either physically or intellectually.
It is a high school/ occupational training center which is solely geared toward post graduation. All of my students are classified as having autism, some more severe than others. I see potential in every one of them and I do my best to bring out their best.
My students are used to people doing things for them as it often takes a while for them to process information and then act on and complete it. As a teacher to these students, it is my goal to make them as independent as possible so when they graduate they will be less reliant on others to function every day. "Independence" means different things to different students: it could mean getting dressed in the morning, personal grooming or being able to complete a task. The further I could bring them along in this process, the better their lives will be. I'd like to see my students getting active for a better future
My Project
I am requesting items such as mazes, beads, puzzles and laces for my students to increase their level of independence and develop fine motor skills. On the surface, it might just look like fun and games but my students are not at a cognitive level where they can learn academics. They are learning to attend to tasks for longer periods of time and doing these tasks independently. These skills will serve them well when they will begin a work site program when they are 16 and for life after graduation. My students need a level of independence and to be able to attend for prolonged periods of time. These resources will help them immensely.
Jamba Juice is offering partial funding for projects where students are getting active. For my students, this project will provide that. Active in independence and self reliance, it's what I want for them and what they need.
The materials requested in my project will offer opportunities for independence, self reliance and success.
They will be getting active in developing functional life skills. My students will be able to work independently--their ultimate goal--with a wide variety of materials. I look forward to my students' progress in attention to task and fine motor skills. These will create more choices for them after they graduate. Thank you, Jamba Juice, for your consideration and for your generosity to others.
