My Project

I'm a late-blooming second-career teacher of middle school and high-school English, full of passion but a little anxious about not having an education background. I was an English lit major in my undergrad years and a writer/editor for several years after college. As such, I've been blessed with opportunities to study and travel extensively in the past, despite my family's modest resources and my small-town Mississippi background. But now that I am back in my home country and state, I work as a teacher in economically disadvantaged areas (rural and inner-city), and I have observed how modern young people often need help understanding the world and their place in it. For many, limited resources and lack of opportunities to broaden their scope have impacted their sense of what is possible. I believe IB education, with its global perspective and focus on leadership development is a great approach to helping children and teens overcome their environmental and circumstantial challenges while embracing the riches of their cultural distinctiveness in ways that allow them to see themselves as potential leaders and changemakers.

As I understand it, IB also helps kids see themselves as citizens of the world with a responsibility to and interdependence on their fellow global community members.

The course I'd like to take will help me gain a thorough grounding in the ideals and aims of the International Baccalaureate program and how best to transmit those ideals to my students through challenging, project-based learning. This training will not only qualify me to register for the IB Certificate in Teaching and Learning but will also, I believe, add to my confidence and effectiveness as an educator. Furthermore, it will give me ongoing access to mentoring and other resources offered by an international professional learning community.
