Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach two blocks of integrated science and two blocks of world history to students with special needs. They have ADHD, autism, visual processing issues, auditory processing issues, anxiety, depression and other learning disabilities. The population is almost 100% hispanic or black, and low income. Finally, the vast majority are far below reading level and, for that reason, hate reading. I want them to love reading, which is why I want to provide for them a wide range of culturally relevant books in a class library. Please help me to do so! It would mean the world.

My Project

If my project is fully funded, I will arrange shelves for my students to check books out of. I will arrange the shelves by content type and by difficulty level. I will make worksheets to go along with the books so that the students can work on their comprehension and vocabulary as they read. I will heavily encourage reading, even incentivizing it with extra credit points. All of this will make all the difference in my students' education. Literacy is the key to knowledge. My students will do better in every single one of their classes, and in their lives down the line, if they become better and better readers.
