Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach a diverse group of exceptional learners in rural, central Washington. My students' needs range from autism to specific learning disabilities. Their grades range from six, seven, eight, and ages eleven to fifteen. I have a group of sixty students whom I teach reading and math. There are approximately ten to fifteen students in each of the two classes of each subject. Class periods are fifty-seven minutes each, with a total of six classes a day.
Economically, all of my students qualify for free breakfast and lunch at school.
This being said, most students' families struggle to provide additional school supplies for their students. They want the best for their students and trust that at school, we are able to fill in the gap. I want to ensure this is done for all my students to help remove the burden from their families.
My Project
I teach a diverse group of students from special needs to general education students. All of my students qualify for free or reduced lunch which means they live below the poverty line.
With this can come some challenges and or trauma.
This can manifest in social and or behavior problems at school and home. I have started teaching my students mindfulness practices as well as a gratitude journal. This has proved very empowering and effective for my students. Now I need more resources to help them.
I want to increase my knowledge by receiving training in specific social emotional learning. I would use this training on a daily basis with all my students.
