Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

During this deadly pandemic, many people are suffering. There's no question about that fact. When you turn on the news, after you wade through the politics, many people are talking about doctors, nurses, EMS workers, delivery workers, and other essentials. YES, they deserve all of our praise and then some.

The ONE group we are NOT thinking and talking about enough are the CHILDREN of those essential workers, who are the victim of unsurmountable stress, anxiety, and fear due to the harsh economic circumstances of their families.

It's simply not their fault. I can't imagine a more helpless feeling than the ones that are described to me via email or on video chat.

And yet, my students, filled with more grit and determination than I've seen in most adults- are asked to balance their concern for getting a proper education and care for younger siblings while their parents risk their lives to pay rent and put food on the table. As for my part, it's been increasingly difficult for me to prepare and organize the caliber of materials without my classroom supplies. Teachers were given little to no notice that we would be moving to Remote Instruction for so many months.

My Project

These materials were carefully selected to give me the optimal tools and resources to do my job. It's never been more important for teachers to have access to high caliber resources and materials. I will use each item to ensure that I build a completely new, revamped novel unit for the beloved classic, To Kill A Mockingbird. Furthermore, items like post its and ink allow for me to prepare and scan the most engaging resources to elevate the academic rigor of my Honors English class.

My students desperately need this vivid escape through literature...and Harper Lee's classic is the best gift that I can offer them at a time like this.

I have selected only a handful of items that I believe will help me achieve my goal - to end the school year the way they gleefully anticipated. Unfortunately, this means I'm in a position where I need to ask for help to supplement the supplies I no longer have access to like printing. I CANNOT let them down!
