Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Help the struggling readers in my class have access to a "real" chapter book that they can read independently. Being able to read a chapter book, just like their on-level classmates, will give them a great sense of confidence, motivation, and of course, skill!
My students are between the ages of 7 and 9.
They attend a general education classroom and are an inquisitive bunch. Their academic abilities are quite varied. Some students excel in math but struggle greatly in reading and writing. In other cases, the opposite is true. In this grade they are supposed to be transitioning from picture books to the pictures they create in their own minds through chapter books.
My Project
There are a variety of chapter book class sets available at our school. Unfortunately, most chapter books are at third grade level and up. Many students, though they are in the third grade, their reading level is below grade level. I need a book for these students that will make these students feels like they too are reading a chapter book, and that they can read it by themselves. Junie B. Jones and the Stupid Smelly Bus has a reading level of 2.5, and gives it great flexibility where it can be used whole group or during small group instruction.
It is hard for struggling readers to be motivated about reading when they only have access to picture books, short stories, or word lists.
Especially when other kids in the class are reading chapter books they're excited about. These students need a continuous story to look forward to reading everyday. It will be a great springboard for students to seek out other chapter books in the series and a great motivator for these below grade level readers to practice reading.
