Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our class motto is "Never Settle for Less than Your Best!" I want my students to become effective communicators who collaborate, expand on their creativity, and enhance their critical thinking skills. I want to prepare my students for 21st century learning, but they lack some resources to do so.
I work with the most lovable bunch of twenty-two diverse fifth grade students.
I teach at a Title 1 school where 15 of my students speak English as a second language and 3 are new to our country this year. Although my school is in a community of high poverty, my students come to school with a smile on their faces, always greet me when they see me in the morning, and never leave without saying goodbye. This group of students is determined to prove to that they are smarter than a fifth grader! They surprise me with their knowledge everyday.
My Project
My 21st century learners use technology everyday. Sometimes they are watching a video in science while other students are creating a digital presentation. Earbuds or headphones were on my 5th graders' supply list at the beginning of the year because they are used daily. Sadly, they get lost or forgotten at home. My students are so kind that they are willing to share their earbuds with their classmates. As thoughtful as that gesture is, it is also a little gross and unsanitary. Some of our students who are newer to our country get accommodations to have tests read aloud to them, but that can not take place if they do not have headphones to help them. We're also getting to that time of the year where students keep looking for another pencil because their eraser is used up. Having extra eraser caps will help them continue to accomplish their daily work such as tackling word problems.
When 5th grade teachers from nearby classrooms ask if they could borrow a headphone for one of their students who is missing theirs, I feel helpless when I don't have such a tool for a child in another class or my own.
Simple supplies of headphones, eraser caps, and a storage bin would go a long way for 5th grade learners in my classroom as well as 2 other 5th grade classes at my school. These resources would allow learning to continue even though a tool for my students is temporarily missing.
