Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
With our class times getting shorter and my classes getting larger, it is becoming more and more difficult to reach and engage every student in my mathematics classes. We are a 1 to 1 school so all of our students have their own laptop that they use at school and take home.
We are a Title I school in a lower income area where 71% of my students qualify for free or reduced cost lunch.
61% Hispanic, 19% White, 9% American Indian, and 8% African American.
I teach 7th and 8th grade math and many of my students come to me academically deficient with gaps in previous grade level standards, which makes it extremely difficult to teach the grade level content without the kids getting frustrated with the difficulty level. They are hard workers and like to use the technology that is given to them here. I want to use that interest they have in technology to my fullest advantage.
We have a lot of transient students that come and go and miss out on important classroom time, lessons, and activities. Many of our students are English Language Learners and need extra support with learning English. When our students go home, parents struggle with helping their children with mathematics. Even with all these challenges, my students are willing to work hard to succeed.
My Project
My students need Camtasia Studio 8 software, a Wacom Intuos Pro Small tablet, and an Alean Nolan MIC2 bluetooth microphone. My students will use these supplies to create videos, podcasts, and screencasts of math concepts and class work that can be shared with other students via google classroom or some other media sharing service. I will use the supplies to record lessons in class so that students who miss class can get caught up. Or if students need to review the work we did in class, they can do so at their own pace outside of the classroom. I will also be creating videos that students can view before class to get them ready for the work we do together in class.
The recording software is unique because it will allow the creation of assessments built into videos so students can quiz themselves on their own understanding.
This technology will help me focus more attention on students' needs in the classroom during the short time we have together and also allow students to receive extra support at home.
It will also allow parents to work together with their children on the work we did in class.
This donation will help me to close the socioeconomic gap that is currently affecting my students and their families. My goal is to have all my 8th grade students ready to take Freshman Algebra by the end of the year.
