This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Students in my class are part of the school's dual language program. This means that all students are learning material in both English and Spanish throughout the year. Approximately half of my class are native Spanish speakers and thus learning English as a second language throughout the year. The other half of my class are native English speakers and must learn the Spanish language and also meet lesson objectives in Spanish.
After several years at our school, most of these students are bilingual and able to read, write, and speak in two languages!
How commendable, especially in this day and age. However, due to the high language demands of learning all subjects in two languages, our students need even more visuals than most.
My Project
I have come to rely on my projector and document camera for my 4th grade students to read maps, view educational videos, critique one another's writing, analyze authors' techniques, and share mathematical strategies and representations. Students are drawn to the large visuals and enjoy the shared experience. Sadly, the document camera has passed away, and the projector has a mind of his own. He's pushing students away and has become Mr. Unreliable.
You see, I don't have a short throw projector, so I must back it up really far to make the image large enough to view, causing students to be pushed farther and farther away from me.
What's worse, he's become unreliable in his old age, often overheating, and not turning or staying on. It's time to give him the boot! My students need a short throw projector to satisfy their visual needs.
More than half of students from low‑income households
