If you're wondering what a mini-fridge and microwave have to do with education, here's a clue. While a classroom is primarily a place of learning, for a big part of the day, five days a week, it's also a sort of home away from home for students -- the place where they get a lot more than just education. It needs to be a welcoming and nurturing environment that offers the occasional snack or drink of cool water, sometimes a warm Hot Pocket or Pop Tart for someone who missed breakfast, or popcorn or pizza rolls for everyone when the class is having a holiday party or a reward. As for the timer, that useful device can help a busy teacher manage instructional time efficiently, give students timed writing exercises and practice drills, and keep track of the countdown in lots of fun classroom learning games.
A short time from now, I'll be going into my classroom to organize and decorate, and besides bulletin boards and anchor charts, I've got to think about a variety of learner needs: I'll stock bandages and cough drops and tissues and hand-sanitizer, extra pens and pencils, and more.
Some of that "more" is where this project comes in. I'd like the kids to know their teacher can keep a few drinks cold for them, has a place where they can warm up their snacks, and can give them a bright, colorful digital countdown display to help them manage their time, whether in work or play. I'm sure I'll think of other things we need as time goes by, but for now, these handy items would be a great start to creating a welcoming and caring classroom environment.
