My Project

A room divider and weighted blanket will support the creation of a calm-down corner in my classroom for students with autism. These specific items will make a meaningful difference in their learning by providing a designated, comfortable space where they can self-regulate, reduce sensory overload, and develop coping strategies. The bean bag will offer a soft, soothing seating option for students who need a safe place to relax, while the divider will help minimize distractions, creating a quiet environment for self-regulation.

A calm-down corner enhances emotional regulation by providing a structured space where students can process their emotions in a safe and supportive environment, helping to prevent meltdowns and classroom disruptions.

My students are unique, bright, and capable learners who thrive when given the right supports. Many of them experience sensory sensitivities, communication challenges, and difficulties with emotional regulation, which can impact their ability to engage in learning. However, with structured strategies like a calm down corner, they can develop the skills needed to self-soothe, regain focus, and participate successfully in class activities.
