Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is a small, independent charter school located in East Oakland, California. Our school's mission and vision is deeply rooted in social justice values. We believe that it is extremely important for students to use their education to liberate themselves, their community and the world.
Our school serves all low-income students of color.
These students come from all different cultures and backgrounds. I have the privilege of teaching our sophomores and seniors. I am their advisor, English teacher and senior events coordinator. I wake up excited to go to work each day because I get to work with some of the most brilliant, hard-working and beautiful students. They inspire me every day through their stories and knowledge. As their teacher, I am constantly learning new things from them.
My Project
I am requesting hygiene products to build a self-care student store for my students. The student store will be filled with shampoo and conditioner, hand sanitizer, lotion, lip balm, bath sponges, etc. Students can use raffle tickets to buy these items for themselves. Since my students are growing teenagers, these items will be a great benefit to them as they learn how to take care of themselves. When students feel good about themselves, they will feel motivated to learn.
This self-care student store will make a difference in my students' learning and well-being because they will be able to take care of some basic needs so they can focus on their learning.
Additionally, it will improve our school cultural because we more than a learning institution; but a community space where we take care of our students' well-being. I want students to know that we are here to provide them with the resources and care that they need to be successful and brilliant young people.
