My Project

As an EC Teacher, my job is to make learning more accessible to students with learning disabilities. Today, children are falling behind their peers in learning for a number of reasons: absences due to sickness, curriculums change, or fixed mindsets take over.

Mathematics, in particular, continues to intimidate students of all ages; however, the subject no longer has to be simple memorization or formulas.

My DonorsChoose showcases the different manipulatives that can be used for students to solve problems (especially those fractions), adopt a growth mindset, and find love for math. Math should be a subject students embrace and enjoy. These manipulatives will influence future engineers, leaders, and creators.

As a first-year EC teacher, it is my goal to not only create a classroom where students are constantly learning and discovering new strategies but also to fill the gaps of understanding for students who constantly feel behind in the general classroom. I must create an environment that motivates students, and allows them to feel comfortable in the "struggle." These tools will not only provide students with new math strategies but also spark an "AHA" moment for the student who "just is not a math person."

Everyone should be given the opportunity to be a "math person." And I will do just that in my classroom.
