On the cusp. This is how I would describe 15-20 of my 8th graders.
Their lives could go either way—toward success or toward despair.
(My Title I school is about 53% Black, 40% Hispanic, 3% mixed-race. All of them are labeled economically disadvantaged and receive free breakfast and lunch at school.)
These students struggle with absenteeism, stamina for schoolwork, attitude, and a vision for the future that looks outside of their neighborhood.
My Project
The graduation tech at my school (who is also a credentialed guidance counselor) is starting a book club with a few 8th graders who are on the edge of the envelope in terms of futures. He has run this before at a different school and had great success with the young men there. I'd like to replicate his success here at our middle school.
These books will be used in a weekly book club for young Black men who are most at-risk of dropping out.
Thank you for your continued, amazing, overwhelming support of me at my new Title I middle school!
