This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Stamford has always been a city with deep baseball history and a very strong love for the sport. History and love continue at our High School. Our players have grown up playing in the local youth leagues and now represent their high school, and their city, with the highest level of pride. The WHS baseball players are a focused and driven group of student-athletes with many succeeding both on the field and in the classroom. We are extremely proud that almost 100% of our seniors graduate and go on to college.
In recent years, budget cuts to the athletics program have made it difficult to keep up with the number of coaches and the equipment needed to stay competitive in the highly talented FCIAC.
In addition, field space and gymnasium availability make it very difficult for our Junior Varsity and Freshman programs to get what they need to grow as players and as a program. Our athletes are members of a diverse, highly populated, urban school community. Over half of our school population are English Language Learners, and in our classroom alone you will find a variety of languages and cultures are represented.
My Project
It is a goal this year for all of our teams to practice together in a rotating station format. We are hoping this will help build program cohesiveness and chemistry. We also look forward to seeing our upperclassmen interact with and set the expecations for our underclassmen. Base-running is a skill that is often over-looked and not seen as important. We are going to change that! One of the stations primary goals will be to increase the speed, agility and explosiveness of all of our players. This will be a core focus during practice and will be emphasized daily. The tools I'm attempting to purchase for this project are extremely effective at accomplishing the goals mentioned above in a quick and efficient manner.
