My Students
My students are a group of highly energetic, amazing children with autism in grades 1-5. Many students with autism have difficulties in learning new information, communicating, and social interaction, especially in the new virtual world!
The students I teach range from mild to severe on the Autism spectrum.
Teaching this special group of kids has been more difficult with learning being done virtually. Most of the kids in my class need small group and teacher led instruction. Learning through computer based programs are not in the best interest of my kids, but we are making it work! I teach in an urban elementary school in Wisconsin with a high poverty rate.
My Project
Our school is currently doing Virtual Learning. Our kids are doing the best they can with these difficult circumstances. We've done our best to structure our school day similar to an in person school day. This means, our kids get to have art, music and gym class each week! We've realized it would be so much more fun and engaging if the kids had some supplies to encourage participation. We would like to provide the kids with some basic tools to increase virtual participation in specials. We would like each child to have a set of rhythm sticks, scarves and egg shakers for music class. A soft ball and a set of cones for gym. Watercolors, construction paper, and model magic would be great for art class. These materials would make a huge difference to our learners!
