Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
We have been able to fundraise for 8 large picnic tables as part of an outdoor classroom space that serves the entire school, but the hot Southern California sun during Fall and Spring rendor them unusable. Since our tables are in a garden area without shade, they are too sunny for much of the school day.
Patio umbrellas will enable students to work outside year-round, increasing their mood and attention levels and allowing them to feel connected to the local ecosystem.
Many of our students live in high density housing and don't have access to outdoor areas. Studies indicate that when students are outside they have better mental health and their school performance improves.
Since our tables are part of a native plant and pollinator garden, students will also be able to engage in hands-on labs outside and perform garden-tending activities. Providing shade above our tables will mean that students will have more opportunity to connect with nature and increase environmental stewardship.
