Help Make Our Family Math Nights POP!

My students need a way to entice their families and friends to come to Family Math Nights to have a safe place to practice their math speak - a popcorn maker and trolley will do the trick!

My Students

Have you ever tried exciting math problems like "The Locker Problem", "The Missing Dollar", or "The Monty Hall Problem"? My students often have problems communicating their thinking related to math problems, but having Family Math Nights provides them with a way to practice their communication.

I work in an 8th grade math classroom with students who care deeply about learning, but are faced with many challenges when it comes to communicating their mathematical thinking.

My students are similar to other middle school students in that they have an inherent curiosity to learn. They love when I introduce a complex problem in class and they work hard to come up with a solution. While my students love exploring new mathematical ideas, it is just a little more difficult for my students since they many of them don't have typical 8th grade writing and speaking skills. They need extra practice communicating their thoughts and our Family Math Nights are the perfect place to do this! Each month, students help their parents and loved ones solve a math problem by explaining what they've learned in class. Students find our family nights to be a safe place to communicate to familiar faces.

My Project

Having this popcorn popper will give students one more reason to get excited about bringing their families in to Family Math Night. It is essential that my students get as much practice as they can in communicating their mathematical thinking as this will ultimately lead to success in high school and beyond.

By talking through a math problem with their families, my students will engage in practice in a safe environment that will also encourage this talk to also happen at home.

Popcorn will make these Family Math Nights all the more exciting and my students need a reason to invite their families to come learn with them at school.
