Every morning we start the day off with a morning meeting and dive right into our lessons. My students are eager to learn and are always hungry for more. They need visuals to learn. The class is a mix of students with disabilities, autism and learning disabilities. Hands on learning is best for them
My students live in a high poverty area in the South Bronx.
There are not many resources for these students at both home and in school. They are generous and have tremendous amount of respect for their teachers and school. The teachers in our school work hard and spend a lot of time making sure that the school is a safe and loving place for students. Teaching in a class with a range of disabilities has really shown both me and the other students how to love one another for who you are and not what you can or cannot do. My students love helping one another. Their faces light up when they learn and they are constantly asking challenging questions. They have a hunger and thirst for knowledge. The fish tank and butterfly kit will help my students understand more about animals. They will be able to see first hand the animals that we will be learning about this year. The notebooks will help my students record their thoughts. The Time Magazine will help teach them about the world around them.
My Project
The requested fish tank and related supplies will become a home for our class pet. My students will learn about animal life cycles and will be able to care for their own animal (fish) in the classroom. This will teach responsibility and respect which my students will learn a lot from. The butterfly kit also teaches my students about life cycles and will be a great resource for them in Spring while they watch the cocoons turn into butterflies.
The requested notebooks will be a great resource for my students to record their observations and thoughts. It will be a journal for them to record their feelings, thoughts and observations about what they are learning. The TIME For Kids Magazine class subscription will be beneficial for my children, to learn about the world around them and to become an active participant in society. It will help to teach them about current events that are important in their lives.
Working in a high poverty area, I get to see that the students who do not have a lot.
They are missing many of the essentials that can help them grow into wonderful learners. Having a classroom that allows them to grow and learn is the best way to make sure that they do not miss these essentials just because of the area where they live.
