it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I've requested snacks for students who may not have eaten breakfast before the start of the school day. As a teacher, I want to offer snacks to students to help support their physiological needs before I start to teach. I also hope that they can see their school and classroom as a safe, welcoming place.
My students are special to me because they are determined in their approach to the challenges of a school day at a school where they're not fluent in the dominant language.
However, they have created their own culture and community within my ENL classroom. I want to nurture that community so that students feel even stronger and more supported when they head out to other classes or leave school at the end of the day.
I have requested folders to help them keep their materials organized, with bright color options so that they have choices. The school offers flimsy paper folders that often rip, and we have run out of them, so damaged ones can't be replaced. The heavy duty option I have requested will better support student use throughout the school year.
Finally, I have requested a color changing lamp so that I can turn off the overhead lights and create a calm and sensory learning space. Many of the students I work with are have experienced or are experiencing trauma outside of school, and I would love my classroom to feel as calming and protected as possible. Students frequently request to turn off the harsh, fluorescent, overhead lights, but then the classroom becomes too dark. If I could turn on this desk lamp, it would provide adequate, soft light and make the room feel special and different than other classrooms. Thanks for considering my request.
