I know \"folders, batteries, and decorations\" may not sound like the most exciting shopping list in the world, but these materials have gotten a surprising amount of use. Also, my rooms ambiance was definitely impacted by the brightness and color of the sunflower garlands, which i strung over the classroom entrance and hung to catch the light in the windows.\r\n\r\nThe folders were an immediate hit. Each class received a different color, which has dramatically reduced the number of conversations that begin with, \"Mister, I lost my paper.\" I could just say \"check the pink folders!\"\r\n\r\nOne student, \"Henry\" covered his folder with drawings and carefully added his name in giant letters across the front. Some other students started decorating theirs, but Henry's was reallty a work of art. A few weeks later, when another student accidentally grabbed it, he spotted it from across the room and yelled, \"That's mine! I spent hours decorating that!\" It was a funny moment, but it also showed how much ownership students had taken over their materials and how much the color inspired imagination creativity and ownership.\r\n\r\nThe folders have helped students keep track of reading packets, vocabulary work, writing assignments, and drafts. Many of my multilingual learners benefit from having a single place to store materials rather than stuffing loose papers into backpacks and hoping for the best.\r\n\r\nThe batteries have also been put to work. They keep our classroom clock running, power our electric candles and seasonal lights, and help maintain a classroom environment that feels calm and welcoming. Students definitely notice when these things are working. More than once I've heard, \"Mr. Nicholson, the fireplace isn't on today,\" before I've even taken attendance. (I have an electric fireplace, no real fire in the school!)\r\n\r\nThe seasonal decorations have probably generated the most commentary. Students helped hang autumn leaves, winter garlands, butterflies, and sunflowers throughout the year. Several students made a habit of announcing the arrival of a new season before class even started. One student walked in, \"Julissa,\" looked around at the sunflower decorations, and declared, \"Okay, now it actually feels like spring.\"\r\n\r\nThese materials even found their way into instruction. During descriptive writing activities, students wrote about the atmosphere of the classroom and discussed how physical spaces influence mood. Having a room with changing displays gave us something concrete to observe, describe, and analyze.\r\n\r\nMost importantly, these materials made the classroom easier to organize and more pleasant to spend seven hours a day in. Teenagers notice when a room is cared for. They notice when things work. They notice when someone has put effort into creating an environment that feels welcoming.\r\n\r\nThank you for helping provide those small but meaningful details. Because of your generosity, approximately 30 copies of The Witch Boy by Molly Knox Ostertag, along with its sequel and additional graphic novels, are now actively enriching our school community.\r\n\r\nThese books live on our classroom library shelves and are used daily. All 27 students in my 9th and 10th grade English Language Arts for English Language Learners class are engaging with them. In addition, 12th grade after-school tutoring students and students from other classes regularly borrow and read the books after seeing them displayed. Your support has extended access far beyond a single classroom.\r\n\r\nNext week, students will read a pivotal moment in the story, when Aster meets Charlie for the first time. The anticipation and excitement in the room are already building. Small-group collaboration allows newer English learners to participate confidently, while more proficient peers serve as leaders and language models. Every student contributes to discussion and textual analysis, building both academic language and critical thinking skills.\r\n\r\nBeyond literacy development, these books foster empathy, belonging, and identity affirmation. The inclusive representation within the story supports meaningful dialogue about internal conflict, expectations, self-expression, and growth... themes that resonate strongly with adolescents navigating complex social realities.
