My students need 3 yoga mats and supplies such as pens, clipboards and markers that they use on a daily basis to as they work both independently and in small groups to meet their learning targets.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have 27 energetic fourth graders in my New York classroom. Many of the children come from low-economic households but they have big dreams. They understand the importance of a good education. Most of the students attend after school programs as well so they are expected to sit for most part of the day at their traditional desks and chairs. Imagine sitting on uncomfortable chairs from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Flexible seating options would make them more comfortable and give them an opportunity to move which is great for their brains.
My students work both in homogeneous groups and in heterogeneous groups in order to accomplish their daily learning targets.
Flexible grouping is not only an instructional strategy but it also teaches them how to work well with others which is a lifelong skill.
My students would be so excited to be the first class to have flexible seating in our school!
My Project
We are in need of some school supplies that will help us meet our daily learning targets. We do a lot of partner work and group work so it is essential that we have everything we need to work on our assignments ready to go. Every minute in the classroom is precious. We would benefit from having supplies including clipboards, highlighters, markers, binder clips, tape and etc., at our fingertips.
As we say in my classroom, "Ready to Rock, Ready to Roll"!
It's so important for us to be prepared to work. We like to work on projects together. This year we are a lab site for reciprocal teaching which emphasizes a lot of small group work. The students often discuss their ideas and answers with their group members and then present it to the whole group using visuals. We are also following the Teacher's College Writing Curriculum which encourages students to revise their written work using highlighters and different colored pens. Having our supplies handy saves us a lot of time. Your donations will help us stay on task.
In addition to the basic school supplies, I also included flexible seating because I want my "kids" to feel comfortable. From my experience, if the children are seated comfortably during independent reading time, they actually enjoy reading and read for longer periods of time. In fourth grade, we read to learn so the more they read, the more they learn.
