My students need five to twenty each of seven high interest books such as "The Kite Runner", "Monster" and "The Prisoner of Guantanamo", to read independently to engage in book club. It is a student centered and run activity that fosters a love of reading.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Reading is the key to success. We have a novel based curriculum. Through literature rectangle discussions, I strive to encourage my students to critically think and read to become better readers, writers, and communicators. We read ten books a year, write eight essays, and learn 600 new words.
My students are reluctant readers.
Some of my students do not complete reading homework therefore are not fully prepared for class discussions. They spend class time fishing for plot instead of relating to and analyzing text. High interest books for book club could quickly change their lives and foster a love of reading.
My Project
My students need five to twenty each of seven high interest books such as Kite Runner, Monster and The Prisoner of Guantanamo, to read independently to engage in book club. It is a student centered and run activity that fosters a love of reading. While I am teaching "Julius Caesar" in class my students will independently engage in book club. Students will be placed in groups of five and choose a book they all are excited about reading. They will divide the pages by the number of weeks we engage in book club. They will assign each person a different role for each week:
Literary Investigator, Discussion Leader, Word Detective, Literary Luminary, Character Analyzer.
Students will bring their work for their assigned role once a week and teach their group. Students are teaching each other and learning from each other.
By supporting my project you will be providing reluctant readers with books that will sparks their interest and foster a love of reading.
I have seen the life changing effect a good book can have on a reluctant reader and it is priceless. You will be a hero!
