My students need 6 copies of 12 book titles, from the Learn To Write series.
I am a kindergarten teacher at an elementary school in a small rural community. It is a very close knit community where the teachers are known to share and collaborate. The area is considered high-need. Resources are definitely in high demand, but the children are still able to get a high quality education because of caring, enthusiastic, and driven educators.
I just finished my first year of teaching kindergarten, and it has been a wonderful experience. It is hard being a new teacher because my students did not have as much access to some of the wonderful books and materials that other teachers have collected over the years. My principal did an excellent job of making sure I had every available resource, but most things in my class were purchased by me. My students have picked up on my love of writing and of books, but I often had to improvise because of my lack of relevant texts. I found the "Learn to Write" series and was able to borrow one or two titles from a friend/fellow teacher, and my students just loved the books. There were relevant to the genres of writing my students were exploring, and the books are written on an appropriate level for their age group.
I would like to have six each of the 12 titles in the "Learn to Write" series. This would enable me to use these high quality, age appropriate, relevant texts in three meaningful ways. I can read the books aloud as part of various mini-lessons, allow the children to read the books together and discuss in small reading groups, and make the books available for independent reading as part of our leveled book library. These books will benefit the students because they give great ideas and instruction in the writing genres we do (for example- functional/procedural writing, persuasive writing, story writing). This not only helps the students, but relates to what they are doing and inspires them. Also, they are "real" books. While my students have appreciated my improvisation, they have said aloud that they like "real" books (not my homemade, paper ones!)
Your donation to my project will provide my students with books that they will love and be able to read. The books will also inspire the children to become better writers and help clarify different writing genres. The books will scaffold their learning, and the children will be so appreciative to know that someone cared and wanted to buy them REAL BOOKS!
