This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My wonderful students are energetic five year olds who love to learn about the world around them! Their diversity inspires me everyday, as over half of my students speak Spanish, Arabic or Amharic at home. My students attend an urban school in Maryland, and are faced with conditions of the highest levels of poverty. Despite this, everyday they work together to learn how to read, write and do complex math. They explore the world together and learn new vocabulary words and how to interact with one another. Most importantly, they have fun and enjoy learning and school to the fullest extent.

My Project

This project is all about introducing my young learners to the democratic processes that shape the world around them. I will use these materials to introduce the concept of the presidency, voting and election to my Kindergarteners this November. I am creating a special unit of study on the election; my students will read books about both candidates and learn about the election process. Then, using the child-friendly voting box, they will cast a vote for their candidate of choice! This project will help bring democracy to life for my students by allowing them to participate in our most important job as citizens. Further, many of my students are recent immigrants to this country, and unfortunately would not be exposed to such important concepts without this unit. By bringing them texts in English and in Spanish, they will not only learn about voting and Election Day, they can actually participate!
