I am the librarian/library teacher at PS 251 in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn. Our school is a Title 1 school with over 80% of the population receiving free lunch.
I am a NYC Teaching Fellow who recently became the librarian at this school. After a few weeks of servicing grades PreK-4, I found that the younger children were having a very hard time choosing their own books from simply seeing the book bindings on the shelves. I have decided that in order to allow the children the independence and joy of finding their own books, a portion of the library should be separated into author studies and theme baskets. Here's where I need your help . . .
I need baskets! All kinds of plastic baskets that teachers use in their classrooms to level their own libraries. I have started with what I have and it has been a great success. Just this morning, a group of first graders dessimated my "Leo Lionni" basket. They told me that they were very happy because the basket made it easier for them to find the books they wanted!
Any combination of sizes and colors of baskets would be great! If you can find baskets cheaper than the ones listed here, feel free to use your imagination!!
