Currently, on my roll, I have 30 students. These children are from a diverse, urban area and the majority of them speak different languages. In fact, at my school, there are over 40 languages that are being spoken at home. My students are so diverse in their abilities, backgrounds, and experiences. They come from all over the world. Many are from Haiti, Palestine, Cambodia, China, Jamaica, and so on. My school is a Title I school that serves over 1,200 and all students receive a free lunch.
Our school district is underfunded from severe budget cuts that have worsened since the Coronavirus Virus.
My Project
My ESOL students are AMAZING! They have worked so hard this year learning how to use the computer and the English language. Throughout the year, I have been motivating them with small treats in the mail like a piece of candy, a homework pass, dance parties, or having virtual lunch with me. During a typical school year we use assemblies, lunch dates, trips, and a prize box to reward students as an incentive to motivate them to always work hard. Right now my students are struggling to keep pushing forward since the material is getting more challenging and my young students are experiencing zoom burnout. My students are hard-working, respectful, sweet, and inspiring. Distance learning really has taken some of the joy out of their school experience, so sending treats and cards is just one way to bring excitement into their lives.
I would love to take the rewards I give my students to the next level at this point in the school year.
Spring fever is kicking in and Zoom fatigue is real. Currently, I have planned lots of online contests to promote community building and sharpen their academic skills so they are prepared for 3rd grade. My students love participating in these games and activities and with the Amazon gift cards, and fun prizes I can send them prizes and motivate them to be sure to participate and join in the fun every day. Thank you.
