Help Keep Student Volunteers Energized!

My students need healthy snacks to keep them energized while they volunteer at after-school and evening school functions.

My Students

My students come from across our urban school district. More than half are 1st or 2nd generation Americans, and many will be the first in their family to go to college. In fact, nearly 99% of our students go on to college.

Student Ambassadors are nominated by faculty because they promote a positive culture in the school by their actions.

Additionally, they give tours to prospective students, help acclimate new students, volunteer to help teachers and administrators, and help out at all school functions. They model good behavior, and they are on the road to making a positive impact in their community, country, and world. My Student Ambassador club consists of 140 students.

My Project

The Student Ambassadors at my school always show school pride, adherence to the code of conduct, kindness, and a willingness to help out, especially at various school functions. Often they stay after school and remain through the evening to volunteer at these events. Feeding them is often problematic; sometimes a parent donates snacks, sometimes there is leftover food from another function, while other times there is no food provided. Often these volunteer activities require them to stay after school until after 9pm, so needless to say, they get hungry! Some of the student ambassadors brought up the issue of the inconsistent availability of food for volunteers, so I asked them to come up with a plan. Here's what they came up with: they want a mix of perishable food (i.e. sandwiches, fruit, etc.) as well as healthy snacks that they can eat quickly during their breaks. Along with my help, they will ask for donations of perishable food items from local restaurants and supermarkets (and parents), and they will also manage the selection of healthy snacks as well as the fair distribution of it to student volunteers at our school functions. The snack options they selected include variety packs of nuts, fruit bars, fiber bars, and other snacks that are on the healthier side (all available through DonorsChoose!). In the past, when funding was available, I would order pizza and chips for them...but their plan will provide student volunteers with healthier food options. Good quality food can go a long way in making students feel appreciated!
