The students at our elementary are a dynamic, diverse and energetic group that's always eager to learn! Much of our student population comes from low socio-economic households. Many of our students eat breakfast and lunch at school through our free and reduced lunch program. Being an Alaskan school we try to incorporate learning with outdoor education and play.
With more than 70% of our students coming from low-income households, sometimes expensive gear can be difficult to afford.
Our students love getting outdoors to learn about our climate, wildlife, and other opportunities the wilderness has to offer. Having proper winter gear, including coats, snow pants, boots, gloves and a hat is an essential need that many of our students do not have access to. Our school is a safe place where students know they are valued, encouraged and nurtured. We want to make sure every student at Taku Elementary is able to stay warm during learning and recess time outside!
My Project
Being able to provide students with warm winter gear allows them to safely participate in outdoor activities during the school day and at home! Keeping our students warm during recess, outdoor learning time and on the weekends is vital in cold Alaskan winters!
Our hope is that we can provide students who do not have warm winter gear with the opportunity to enjoy their time outdoors during the school day and at home.
Taking students outside to learn, socialize and play promotes unique and interactive learning opportunities that every student deserves to enjoy in warm gear!
