Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have the pleasure of working with a great group of 9th grade ESL students who couldn't be more excited to read. The problem is, I'm faced with as many different interests and reading levels as I am students.
My students are 9th and 10th grade ESL students in New York.
They attend a large public high school in Manhattan. They come to me with a wide range of English reading abilities, from students recently arrived in the United States to students who were born here yet have only heard another language at home growing up.
My Project
I need as varied a classroom library as I have students filling my classroom. A wide variety of books will catch and keep their interest in reading this entire year. I've noticed that independent reading is something that improves my students confidence and ability to speak, read, and write in English. The key is to keep them interested in what is on the shelves.
By donating to this project you are enabling NYC ESL students to foster a love for reading that will benefit them throughout their remaining years in high school, in college, and beyond.
