I teach the first grade in an urban setting.I have been teaching children to read for a dozen years. My students are very diverse. We are also an inclusion school. Every classroom has a student with special needs. Many of my students come from lower socio-economic backgrounds.
My students struggle with learning to read. Many of my students came to school unprepared and are at contrast with those who had early childhood education. My struggling students need access to easy readers. Unfortunately, reading curriculum provided by the public schools does not provide books that interest the children. They are dry and dull. They are full of words that are too difficult for many of my students to be able to practice reading.
The number one, all time favorite books for children are and always will be...Dr. Seuss! Did you know that Dr. Seuss's collection of books was created to replace the old Dick and Jane series? The children still love the Dr. Seuss books we grew up on. These books are classic. The helpful rhyming words are surrounded by words called high frequency words. Such as, the, said, and, etc. When children read Dr. Seuss they are propelled by the rhyming words and the high frequency words act like the glue that keeps the story running smoothly. Dr. Seuss books are perfect for practicing reading. They build fluency in readers. This is the ability to read at a quick rate.
With the help of the good people who consider donating through donorschoose my students have a chance at accessing the best readers out there. Please make a donation toward providing my students with years and years of classic reading practice.
