Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am a teacher in a Title l public school in Harlem. There is one general education class and there are two special education classes per grade, and many of our students are second language learners.
I have been teaching at my school for 18 years.
Three years ago I became the science teacher.
I am still trying to make every student realize the expanse of the world of science and to find what excites each of them.
Over the past three years, more and more of the students are wanting to spend time in the science room, borrowing books and/or wanting to learn more about the materials in the classroom.
My Project
I am very aware that the science curriculum I am required to teach doesn't excite every child. That is why I place such an emphasis on making sure my science library has something for every child. (My last funded project gave the library a Max Axiom collection of books. These are still popular!) What I have been finding, however, is that the 3rd graders are the most enthusiastic and constant readers. Unfortunately their enthusiasm wanes as they move on to the 4th and 5th grades.
The children themselves have told me the particular types of books they would want to read.
They have been asking for more "I Survived", "Weird But True" and "Myths Busted". I then looked for more books along these lines.
I am hopeful that once they start to tell me interesting facts from these books I will be able to steer them to other books in our science library that are more specific about the animal, habitat or weather that matches their new found interests.
