This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I teach language arts to a group of fifth-grade students who are avid readers. When you walk into my classroom, you can see students engaged in reading varied texts at their levels while also working on refining skills that target areas of literacy, their learning plans, their communication abilities, and even their specific interests.
We are currently reading Ghost by Jason Reynolds, and my students are so engaged in the reading of this text.
Reading literature that makes students think and engage in discussions of issues that are relevant and worthwhile are proven ways of motivating students in the language arts classroom. This is literature that will challenge their thinking and better prepare them for the rigorous literature that they will encounter in middle school.
Students need opportunities like these to have real novels and authentic books in their hands so they can be read, analyzed, and discussed. Please consider making a difference in this group of students' lives by giving them access to copies of other books in Jason Reynolds' Track Series: -Lu, Patina, and Sunny.
