My Students
Growth means change and change involves risk, stepping from the known to the unknown.
Recently my principal informed me he is moving me from Physical Science (11 years teaching) to Life Science (last taught 8 years ago!)
I need to totally update the hands-on lab experience for these students.
I teach in a rural Alabama school where 76% of my students eat free and reduced lunch.
I have been teaching here for 8 years and love these students! I have been teaching 8th grade Physical Science and have built a large supply of materials and resources. However, I am being moved to 7th grade Life Science next year (most of my supplies will be useless) and I have been charged with improving the curriculum, raising achievement and test scores, as well as improving behavior management in a difficult age student.
One thing I know about teaching middle school is that in order to reduce behavior problems they have to be busy & engaged in meaningful activities. My goal next year is increase the number of hands-on learning activities that I have access to in my new classroom for my students to use and learn from.
My Project
I am asking for 4 sets of Microslide activities. Microslide Viewers are like microscopes, only much more durable (no glass to break when accidentally dropped!) and easier to use and store. Microslide activities do not require electricity or special lighting. They are simple to operate; just insert the slide and focus.
The students love to use these activities and learn with the guided activity sheets included with each lesson.
I am asking for lessons on Helpful Bacteria, Harmful Bacteria, The Plant Kingdom, and Monocots and Dicots to add to my collection.
My students will benefit from these activities in a variety of ways.
They will learn to work in cooperative groups. They will be learning not by looking at pictures in a book, but through actual microscope slides that are prepared and presented in a format ideal for a middle school aged student. They will be more focused on learning and less on causing disruptions and problems in the classroom because they are "doing" and not just "sitting".
