Learning to write is a very difficult task for most students. Students need multiple models to learn this important task. Real "live" models for students to see on the spot would show them that writing IS within their reach.
Our students come from a city where there is a diverse student body.
They need to be able to see the writing process as it is happening. Technology is mostly non-existing in this classroom. I am using an overhead projector that does not always work. Displaying models, revising and editing, and creating essays before their eyes would be an awesome way of showing our students HOW writing works!
My Project
A document camera would allow me to bring my classroom into the 21st century. It would be wonderful to be able to simply take a student sample, and work through any problems or "blocks" that my students may have. If students are writing on computers, I would also have the ability to attach the laptop to the camera and project their writing piece up on the screen for a whole class discussion. Students will be able to see that once their ideas are down on paper (computer), there are many ways to edit work to make their sentences and paragraphs and stories "pop". The power of language could be displayed before their eyes and the exciting part is that it is THEIR work.
Because most of our students have technology in their grasp, they need to have some NEW way to learn this very difficult task of writing.
Through technology, I can show my students that their writing can be transformed into something to be proud of. I want them excited about writing.
