My Project

Providing my 7th and 8th grade students with Ghost by Jason Reynolds will make a meaningful impact on their learning by immersing them in a high interest novel that explores the challenges of not fitting in, overcoming trauma, and navigating poverty. Rather than running from his problems as a means of survival, the main character, Castle "Ghost" Cranshaw, discovers that running can lead to growth, purpose, and self discovery. This novel highlights important themes of perseverance, trust, resilience, identity, friendship, and the power of mentorship.

Through Ghost, students will see the importance of confronting their fears, finding support in unexpected places, and believing in their own potential.

This story not only fosters a love of reading but also encourages meaningful discussions about personal growth and the strength it takes to overcome challenges.

I plan to use this novel with an English Language Arts support class, similar to reading intervention. Because it is a high interest, low level book, it can be used across numerous grade levels (6th-10th grade), making this novel is an excellent choice for support classes of varying ages in addition to the Oakridge School District collection. In the coming years, I will add it to the 7th grade curriculum to give students more diverse reading opportunities.
